Yellowstone National Park: How to Fully Enjoy Your Travel

Yellowstone National Park is one of the best reasons for living in and visiting the United States. The vast natural forest is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna and it’s been preserved so well that pleasant and exciting surprises await the adventurous visitor. If you’re planning a trip to Yellowstone soon, here are some travel tips you can use for your safety and security:

Be aware of prevailing conditions but be ready for anything
Yellowstone is like a whole different world in itself. Conditions vary here, changing easily from calm to stormy within just 24 hours. When traveling to Yellowstone, always check weather conditions in the area and use precautions to ensure your safety for the trip.

Practice defensive driving. The area going to and within Yellowstone is often used by both humans and animals. Be especially aware of distracted drivers, animal crossing and other related incidents. These will result to travel delays, so be very patient.

Bring all necessary gear and supplies
When traveling to Yellowstone, bring all the basics with you in terms of food, water, clothing and survival gear. Having sufficient supply of clean water is essential since water from the park itself is not guaranteed safe. Drinking water from streams, lakes, ponds or creeks that have not been boiled or treated could put you at risk of intestinal infestations and infections.

Even water from thermal pools isn’t safe for consumption. They have been known to cause serious burns in numerous visitors over the years.

As for equipment, think of worst-case scenarios. Bring a tent, weather-resistant clothing and other survival equipment such as lighters, all-purpose knives, flashlights, first aid kits, etc. to ensure your personal safety and protection.

Take care of your trash
Food, food scraps, containers, tissues and other materials that end up in your trash should be disposed of properly. During travel to Yellowstone, be aware that the trash you leave behind could have a negative impact not just on the environment but also on the animal residents of the area.

Think safety, regardless of where you are
When entering Yellowstone, know that you are at the mercy of Nature. Your only defense is correct information and common sense. When traveling to Yellowstone or participating in the numerous activities available there, be aware of animal activity. Bears, for example, are just a few of the natural threats that you have to watch out for. When driving, walking, hiking or camping, be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for signs of animal activity that might expose you to danger unnecessarily.

Follow regulations
Yellowstone maintains a strict system for its camps and backcountry areas. Be aware of all regulations that are in place not just to ensure you don’t violate any rules but also for your own personal safety.

Certain activities also require permits. Camping, for example, is allowed only in certain designated areas. Permits for overnight stays have to be obtained personally in advance, so check with the administrative office for information.

Enjoy yourself
Yellowstone is too beautiful to ignore. When traveling, bring a camera to capture the scenic routes and spectacular views. As long as you keep safety and security measures in mind, you can be assured of a very enjoyable trip to Yellowstone again and again.

Thanksgiving has passed, but it’s not over yet. As the weather gets cooler and other winter holidays approach, it’s always a temptation to eat more and exercise less, potentially resulting in weight gain, a wider waist, and a slower metabolism. We may also feel stressed from personal and professional commitments.

If you’re satisfied with whatever diet and exercise plan you have, stick with it. If it’s been lacking or you feel the stress of the season may interfere, try this: Between now and the end of the year, try to set aside at least 30 minutes or more on most days of the week for physical activity. Exercise can help shake those winter blues. It can help you improve eating habits and can reduce food cravings in people prone to overeating.

Your routine doesn’t have to be all in one stretch, and it doesn’t have to be strenuous. Make a workout of household cleaning. Take the stairs. Go sledding. For extra motivation, work out with a colleague, friend or family member. With just a little planning now, you can stay fit, feel more energetic, and still enjoy the holidays.

Indoor Winter Maintenance

Staying in shape when it’s cold outside may take a little more effort and a dash more creativity than other times of the year, but it’s worth it. Stick with your winter workouts, and you’ll be a lot happier when the sweaters come off and the beach gear comes on. Exercise also keeps you occupied, filling time that might otherwise be spent on mindless eating. Health & Fitness Services offers several suggestions to keep you moving indoors.

Go for a walk. Walking is an easy way to meet the recommended amount of daily activity and avoid the holiday weight gain that can lead to obesity. Don’t have or not a fan of the treadmill? Some people walk with a friend or family member through indoor shopping centers before doors officially open for business. Walking outdoors can also be fun. Walking is not only a good choice for healthy living, but it is also great for strengthening relationships with friends and family.

Every little bit helps. You can watch TV without necessarily being a couch potato. Go for a walk or run on your treadmill, do some step aerobics, jump rope or jog in place. Any movement, even if it’s simply doing push-ups during the commercials, is worth something. When you’re at the mall, pick up a workout video. You can turn your TV into an exercise machine by popping in that video instead of just sitting there!

Join others at the gym. Contact your local gym to inquire about group exercise. If the basics like spinning or step aerobics don’t appeal to you, look into something different, such as candlelight stretch, circuit aerobics, yoga aerobics, aqua running, or boot camp where available. You don’t have to join an expensive gym to find a group exercise class. Many community centers, universities, and hospitals have health/fitness centers that offer classes at low or no cost.

If you’re unsure of what gym to join, check out the list of discounted commercial gym memberships available through the National Health & Fitness Program. And don’t forget you can also take advantage of the Fitness Subsidy Program to cover up to half of the basic cost (excluding the cost of classes) of your gym membership!

Keep your weight up. That is, keep up your weight training routine. Doing a weight workout that involves the major muscle groups of your chest, back, legs, abs and arms not only burns calories, it also builds and maintains metabolism boosting muscle. All you need is your body weight and a few dumbbells for an at-home weight workout. Exercise bands are also a great alternative to dumbbells. Buy a basic weight training video or try this indoor winter workout. (Consult your personal physician or other health care provider before starting this or any other exercise routine, especially if you are new to exercise.)

Let’s Take it Outside

No matter what the temperature may be outside, you may still love the outdoors. Then embrace the cold weather by taking up a winter sport. If skiing, the classic winter sport, isn’t your idea of fun, there are other cold weather activities to consider. How about ice-skating, sledding, winter hiking and cross-country skiing? By dressing properly and heeding cold-weather safety tips, you can exercise outdoors. Here’s our advice to keep you moving safely outside.

Dress the part. You’ll need to dress in layers. Start with a thin layer of synthetic material such as polypropylene, which draws sweat away from your body. Next try fleece for insulation. Top this with a waterproof (e.g. nylon) outer layer. To warm the air you breathe, wear a face mask or a scarf over your mouth. Remember to wear a hat and gloves. Also, choose footwear with enough traction to prevent falls on slippery surfaces.

Remember sunscreen. Sunburn is possible any time of year, even when it’s cold. Snow reflects the sun’s rays. You’ll also want to use a lip balm with SPF.

Start slowly. It’s ok to feel a little chilly at first, as you’ll warm up quickly. Don’t forget to stretch afterwards.
Prevent dehydration. Water is important for body temperature regulation, so cold weather increases fluid needs, just like hot weather. Drink water or sports drinks before, during, and after your workout, even if you’re not thirsty. Cold air has a drying effect, which can increase the risk of dehydration. In turn, dehydration increases the risk of frostbite.

Head indoors. The wind can penetrate your clothes and remove the insulating layer of warm air that surrounds your body. Activity that involves fast motion, such as skiing, running, cycling, or skating, also creates wind chill because it increases air movement past your body. If the cold seems unbearable despite the insulation from your clothing, head indoors.

If you see a patch of hard, pale, cold skin, you may have frostbite. Further, if your body temperature drops too much, you may experience hypothermia – intense shivering, slurred speech, loss of coordination, and fatigue. If you suspect numbness from frostbite or the symptoms of hypothermia, get out of the cold and seek emergency care.

Who said it’s cold outside? Is it sunny and warm this time of year where you live? Then go for that family walk outside. Jog, roller blade, bike, and take advantage of what most of us wish we have this winter! Aim for at least 30 minutes most days of the week.

Physician’s consent. For some people, cold air can trigger chest pain or asthma attacks. If you have any medical conditions, consult your personal physician or other health care provider before exercising in cold weather, especially if you are new to exercise.

Time to Eat!

The winter holidays are typically celebrated with luscious indoor feasts of food, food, and more food. Holiday shopping also draws us to unhealthy fast food restaurants. Here are some quick pointers to help you from stuffing your face:

? On the day of the party, eat regularly all day long. If you go to a dinner party and have starved yourself all day long, it will be difficult not to overindulge.

? At the party, start with the healthy foods. Filling up on fruits and vegetables should keep you from overindulging in fattening foods.

? Beware of alcoholic beverages. Some of them may contain several hundred calories!

? On-the-go? Have a piece of fruit, low-fat/low-sugar energy bar, or other healthy snack on hand to prevent that super-sized meal in the mall.

And even if it’s not a holiday, we may be trapped indoors because of the weather and often eat while sitting at the computer or watching television. It’s tempting to hit the mood-boosting carbs and fattening comfort meals over the winter, but try and resist the urge to comfort eat. Consider these tips this winter:

Remember to stay hydrated! As unappealing as a bottle of cold water may be when it’s freezing outside, it is important to keep up your fluid intake. Regular water intake may also help cut cravings.

Soup is a great way to get rid of winter’s chill and keep hydrated, especially if it’s low in salt. If it’s stocked with a variety of vegetables, beans, and grains, it can boost your nutrition as well. The plus in soup starts with the broth. Make chicken or beef broth by boiling the meat, then skim any fat before adding the vegetables, beans, and grains.

Nutrition bonuses come from the vegetables. Load your soup with dark green vegetables for fiber, vitamins, and phytochemicals – the agents in vegetables that give them their color, and may aid in preventing disease. Beans provide protein, vitamins, fiber, and more phytochemicals. So, not only will you stay warm and hydrated, you may also prevent heart disease, cancer, and keep your immune system strong!

Drink to fight the winter bug. We are more susceptible to coughs and colds in the winter, so it’s a good idea to stock up on immune-boosting Vitamin C. Have a small glass of 100% fruit juice (e.g. orange juice is very high in Vitamin C) with your breakfast every morning. If you’re conscious of the calories, you can take a Vitamin C supplement instead.

Keep it whole grain. Try foods with a low glycemic index (GI), such as brown rice rather than enriched white rice, whole wheat bread and pasta rather than those made with white refined flour. If you’re baking, try whole wheat pastry flour instead of all-purpose white flour. Replace your summer smoothie with a warming bowl of oats, an excellent low-GI food.

Low GI foods are invaluable during the winter (or anytime of the year), as they release energy slowly. They prevent you from having those sugar highs and lows, which can have a negative affect on your mood, reducing the likelihood of you exercising. As always, watch the portion size! Anything in excess can cause you to gain weight.
Holiday Sanity

Pressure from personal and professional commitments at especially this time of year can cause stress. You may not realistically have time to get in as much exercise as you’d like. The sun may not be shining as much, making you feel down. How can you improve your mood? This is what we think.

Prioritize. Find a quiet place alone and take a few moments to think through your priorities. Ask yourself which commitments, goals, or responsibilities are most important to your well-being. Then, focus reasonable attention on those things, while deliberately allowing the less important matters to wait. By exerting some intentional control, you should feel less overwhelmed.

Don’t turn to overeating. Find the time to exercise, as any type of exercise can help your mood.

Don’t stress the family reunion. The holidays can be a time to gather with family members, whom may be sources of social support, as well as sources of emotional friction. In the workplace, you may be recognized as a reliable professional, but back at home you may be known as the “overweight younger cousin” or be harassed with questions about your personal life from nosy relatives. When dealing with these types of family members, recognize what is happening and take control over your own reactions. Consider the person whose behavior annoys you. Does their behavior tell you they are disgruntled, depressed, self-absorbed, or just plain insensitive? Realize that you are not responsible for their actions, comments, or issues.

Remember that you don’t need to let yourself become drawn back into roles or relationships of your past, and you have no obligation to respond to intrusive or annoying questions. Change or deflect the subject or just walk away.

When it comes to diet and exercise, the theme of moderation should not be forgotten. Keep in mind that it is easier to stay in shape than it is to get in shape. Sticking to a diet and exercise routine that you’ve already established allows you to maintain your level of fitness and continue to enjoy the results that you’ve worked so hard for. Even if your routine is light, staying in the habit of exercise is better than dropping out altogether and risk losing your desire to get back into it again.

4 Places To Go Walking In Portugal

Portugal has some of the most striking landscapes in Western Europe, but it has yet to acquire the fame and popularity of France and Spain as a walking destination. A Portugal hiking holiday can encompass many different experiences – walking along the legendary coast of the Algarve, trekking through little known parks in the north of the country, exploring dramatic river valleys, or just strolling around beautiful cosmopolitan cities. If you are looking for a truly beautiful place to go hiking, Portugal should be near the top of your list of places to go.

Here are a few of the regions you should consider when considering from a range of walking holidays in Portugal…

The Algarve

The Algarve is famous as a destination for golfers and beach lovers, but this spectacular coastal region also offers great walking for keen hikers. The rocky coastline has some great routes to walk along and some glorious golden beaches to see, but venture inland and you’ll be treated to a beautiful landscape of rolling hills, orange groves, lush forests and traditional villages. The walking here, in general, is not especially arduous, making it the ideal choice for a relaxing walking holiday in Portugal.

The Emerald Coast

The Algarve may be Portugal’s most famous and popular holiday region, but in the north-west, there is a little known coast that at the very least matches the Algarve for natural beauty. The Costa Verde (Emerald Coast) offers some of the best hiking in Portugal, with the old paths through the Serra d’Arga mountains and the valley walk through the Ancora Valley being two of the best routes in the area. As the name suggests, it is a lush and verdant landscape that is a delight to explore on foot.

The Douro Valley

The Douro River is one of the most spectacular natural features in Portugal. Stretching from the heart of Spain all the way to the coast of Portugal, this 900 kilometre river offers some excellent opportunities for walkers, especially in and around the Douro Valley in Portugal. In addition to some beautiful riverside walks, the area also offers charming villages, handsome cities…and the famous local port! This area receives far fewer visitors than Portugal’s coast, and so is a great way to get away from the crowds.

The Northern National Parks

The north of the country is seldom visited by tourists, yet it contains numerous national parks and some of the most dramatic countryside in Portugal. It is a landscape of sprawling forests, parkland, deep gorges and an abundance of natural wildlife. Mountain lovers in particular will not want to miss out on this area, with several major mountain ranges (including the Alväo and Moräu) all providing some great places for Portugal hiking.

These are just some of the great places for a walking holiday in Portugal, offering everything from high mountains to golden beaches, easy half day hikes and tough multi day walks. You could even venture across into Spain or out to the Portuguese island of Madeira if you wanted to go further afield – the entire Iberian Peninsula is truly a walker’s paradise!

Adventure Tours Throughout the United States and Canada

Some vacations just do not cut it with a certain type of traveler; they seek more from their vacation plans. They want to be able to live on the edge, seeing the sights while breaking away from the same types of vacation tours that everyone else is taking. It is for people such as these that adventure tours were created. They combine the tour packages of the past with the thrill-seeking mentality of the modern generation. There are a number of adventure tour destinations available in North America and they are currently rising in popularity. If you think you may be interested in taking one of these tours, then here are some of the most popular options available.

One destination that has always been popular is the Grand Canyon. Unlike the tours that provide you with a view of the beauty and majesty of the canyon from above, however, an adventure tour of the Grand Canyon takes you through the rapids of the Colorado River along the entire length of the canyon. Though the lengths of these tours may vary, a rafting tour of the entire canyon is generally an 8 to 10 day excursion.

Another popular adventure tour destination is Alaska. From ice fishing in northern Alaska to sea kayaking along the coast, there are a number of different adventure options available. Visitors on an adventure tour can view wild bears, take hikes through the Alaskan wilderness, raft a variety of rivers, and camp in some of the most rugged wilderness locations in North America. The length of Alaskan adventure tours can vary greatly depending on the activities involved, with some tours lasting for as few as 3 days to as many as 12.

Given the adventurous history of the American west, it should come as no surprise that there are a number of western-themed adventure tours to choose. Some of these involve visiting a number of historical Wild West locations while others focus on the western deserts and hiking through some of the amazing national parks in Arizona and Nevada. Other western tours actually manage to incorporate adventure locations in several states, letting you visit some of the most majestic locations in the west to see their beauty firsthand. The length of the western adventure tours depend largely on the area that they cover, with some lasting only 2 or 3 days while others can last for 1 to 2 weeks.

For those who are seeking a more modern adventure, there are adventure tours which can allow you to explore cities Las Vegas, Reno, and other similar hotspots. The focus of these adventure tours is not only on the sights and sounds of the main cities themselves, but also on the history and majesty of the surrounding land. Most adventure tours to Las Vegas and Reno last from 3 to 7 days and generally include trips to the most popular casinos and shows in addition to hiking in the surrounding desert. This allows one to gain a better appreciation for the cities, which appear as jewels upon the desert.

A number of different California adventures are available as well, helping visitors to see exactly how diverse the state really is. Adventures in the major cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco allow the opportunity to explore the forests and vineyards in the northern portion of the state. Most visitors are amazed at exactly what California has to offer in the way of adventure opportunities. A number of hiking tours can be found that allow you to visit some of the most majestic California locations on foot, letting you camp under the open sky while on your way to your final destination. California adventure tours can last for as few as 3 days to as many as 14 depending on the area being covered by the tour.

Of course, not all adventure tours involve hiking, rafting, or spending time traversing the natural lands of North America; a number of adventure tour companies also offer RV rental so that you can take a driving tour of some of the classic roadways in America and Canada. This allows you to travel in comfort while taking in some amazing sights and visiting places that you otherwise may not have known existed. RV adventure tours generally last for as long as you want to rent the RV. The average length of an RV tour is typically between 5 to 14 days.

There are many benefits to planning an adventure vacation. If you enjoy the thrill of adventure, this vacation may be right for you. Available activities range from hiking and kayaking to exploring cities such as Las Vegas and California, but this type of trip may require renting an RV. If you are interested in extreme sports, you may enjoy a vacation, which consists of hiking and kayaking. Those adventures provide the opportunity to experience a once in a lifetime moment, that can be remembered for many years.

Safety Ideas For Your Hiking Adventure

Are you, your family, your friends, or your romantic partner planning to take a hiking adventure soon? As you likely already know, hiking can be fun and exciting, but it can be dangerous at the same time. Of course, there are a number of different steps that you can take to protect yourself on your next hiking adventure and a few of those steps are outlined below.

If you have yet to choose your hiking trail, you will want to do so soon. The sooner that you choose your hiking trail, the easier it will be to familiarize yourself with where you will be hiking. When choosing a hiking trail, it is advised that you take the difficulty level into consideration. For instance, you can find hiking trails in the United States that are designed for beginners, as well as those that have advanced hiking experience.

Once you have decided which hiking trial you would like to hike on, you will want to take the time to fully familiarize yourself with the trail. If you are able to acquire a map of the hiking trial in question, you will want to closely examine it. You will want to know exactly where you are at all times, as well as how to get out of the area, in the event of an emergency. If you do acquire a map of the hiking trial that you plan on hiking, you will want to make sure that you bring a copy of the map with you. This will also assist you in the event of an emergency.

You will want to think about familiarizing yourself with the security of the hiking trial or park in question; get their contact information so you can contact them in the event of an emergency. Speaking of contacting security guards, you will want to make sure that you bring a cell phone with you. A cell phone will allow you to call for help if you or someone in your hiking party has an accident or wanders off the trail. If you do not own a cell phone, you may want to think about buying a cheap prepaid one or borrowing the cell phone of someone that you know.

Although it is important that you bring a cell phone with you on your next hiking adventure, a cell phone is not all that you will want to bring. Even if you are only planning on hiking for a day or two, you will want to make sure that you have enough food and drinks, just incase something went wrong. Many hikers are urged to prepare for the worst, just incase. For that reason, you may want to think about packing a number of extra snacks and drinks.

Another great way that you can stay safe on your next hiking adventure is by making sure that you have all of the right hiking equipment or hiking supplies. In this aspect, you will want to make sure that you are dressed for the hike. Hiking should involve sneakers at the least, but you may want to think about buying a set of hiking boots. You will also want to review the weather before leaving. Even if it will be bright and sunny, you may still want to think about bringing a light coat with you, incase of rain or incase you become stranded on the hiking trail overnight.

Perhaps, the best way that you can go about staying safe on your next hiking adventure is by letting your friends and family members know where you are going, when you will be leaving, and when you will return. Should you not return on time, those that you know should be able to find you, or at least have a generalized idea of where you are. You may also want to think about writing down the same information and leaving it at a safe place at home.

The above outlined hiking safety tips are just a few of the many that you may want to think about practicing. As a reminder, hiking can be fun and exciting, but it can also be dangerous as well.

Cloudveil’s vision has, from the beginning, been linked to the mountains.

Cloudveil took shape in the minds of friends (and company founders) Stephen Sullivan and Brian Cousins during the winter of 1994. Both shared a profound belief that there was room in the mountain apparel market for focused, performance-oriented clothing that would dare to think “outside the box” when it came to functional design, fabrication, and innovation. Living in the alpine, climbing, and backcountry skiing playground of Jackson Hole, Stephen and Brian decided that there was no better place to base their business. Cloudveil clothing debuted in the fall of 1997 to rave reviews.

Cloudveil. Inspired mountain apparel.

Designed, developed, and tested in these rugged environs, Cloudveil’s clothing has, more than a decade later, traveled the globe, enduring the toughest conditions on earth. High-tech fibers, fabrics, and insulation meet traditional natural materials, such as goose down and merino wool, to keep you warm and comfortable in even the worst weather Mother Nature can conjure up. Each design, from signature soft shells and highly aerobic layers to relaxed lifestyle clothing, is a direct result of the enhanced perspective that comes directly from the mountain experience.

Cloudveil’s Philosophy

Cloudveil designs gear for people who find revelation in spectacular mountain places. Regardless of local range or current residence, an entire population with the aspiration to live this lifestyle shares Cloudveil philosophy—if your heart feels most at home where the earth meets the sky, Cloudveil makes inspired mountain apparel you’ll love.

Collections

Cloudveil has a full range of jackets and layering pieces for any conditions. The Hard Shell outerwear collection is made of all-weather, versatile fabrics from classic Gore-Tex® to ultra-lightweight, packable designs. The Soft Shell group has been Cloudveil’s signature product line since 1997. These stretch-woven jackets and pants provide warmth and comfort for active pursuits. The performance Synthetic Insulated styles ensure you have no excuse for staying indoors in single-digit weather, while the Insulated Down designs combine the best of both worlds—natural insulation and technical advances—to create the ultimate outerwear hybrid.
If you don’t know how to choose a hiking backpack, or if it’s the first time you buy a backpack there are several aspects you should consider:

Choosing the right hiking backpack is very important. You carry your backpacks during the whole duration of hikes, be it few hours or multiple days: it holds all your resources hence you want it to be of the appropriate size, not too small nor excessively big.

Finding good backpacks for hiking requires you to do some research, spend some time and spot deals.

The type of hikes you do determines the type of backpack you should choose.

Do you need day hike backpack or a backpack for multiple days hikes? The size of your backpack depends mostly on this. If you are going for multiple days hikes your backpack will need to be bigger than the one you would buy for day hikes.

Moreover, for particular hiking trips like climbing or other special sports, you’ll need particular backpacks with enough room and pockets to accommodate all your special gear and make it quickly available when needed.

Once you know what kind of hikes you are going for you will know what backpack to shop for.

Today you can find backpacks to accommodate any needs, from the smaller ones to the largest ones with multiple internal compartments, studied for day hikes, multiple days hikes, long backpacking trips, climbing, snowboards and many more types of hikes.

Backpacks are designed to fit specifically on women’s or men’s shoulders which are obviously different: this is another thing to consider when shopping for a backpack.

Price is obviously important when shopping for a hiking backpack, it is indeed one of the most important variables to consider. Once you have chosen the type of backpack you need you will find backpacks with very different prices.

For beginners it’s not recommended to purchase an expensive first backpack, specially if you don’t know if you are going to enjoy this sport and continue practicing it; a good rule of thumb is however not to settle for the lowest prices because of low quality materials.

Huge discounts can be found online so even better backpacks become affordable: shopping around you can find huge discounts

Book Review – In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson

Bill Bryson is best known for his humorous travel writing. Previously, I had read two of Bryon’s other books. One was titled, I’m a Stranger Here Myself. This book was about Bryson’s return to living in the United States after living in Great Britain for twenty years or so. His writing portrayed how differently Americans are from the rest of the world, from the cars we drive to our love of fast food restaurants. The second book of his I read was titled, A Walk in the Woods. This book was about Bryson’s attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail, from start to finish (Georgia to Maine). He accurately portrayed the difficulties in hiking pretty much the entire east coast and all of the interesting animals and people one might encounter while on the mighty trek.

Keeping in line with his first two books, the third book I read was called In a Sunburned Country. This book deals with Bryson’s multi-week trip through the massive land mass that is Australia. The author traveled to all of the major tourist destinations, from viewing the Sydney Opera House to the Great Barrier Reef, and everywhere in between. He seems to have traveled at a leisurely pace and a very generous budget.

While reading In a Sunburned Country, you notice how much character Australia has as a whole, and also how quirky it is. Bryson notes several times that Australia has dozens of prized, larger-than-life monuments of random objects. For example, he travels to a giant earth worm museum located in a, you guessed it, enormous earth-worm shaped building. Some might consider this type of monument weird, but it is one of the many unique things that Australia has and takes pride in. If Australia has the largest, most disgusting worm in the world, why not show it off?

Bill Bryson also discusses many times how the country has thousands of animals that are not even discovered yet and do not exist anywhere else in the world. People constantly trek into the jungle or Outback to look for undiscovered animals, and the result is that once in a while an animal that was thought to be extinct thousands of years ago is found. Not only are there rare animals, but there are trees that rival the size of any trees in the world and some of the oldest organisms in the world, that simply look like a gray mush.

One of the constant themes in this book is that the country is much larger than anyone realizes. Cities are spread out here and there, and the large ones are on the coast, but there are small cities of hundreds of thousands of people that are thousands of miles away from any other city. Getting from one city to another may take a day or two, and everywhere in between the two cities is desert with an occasional gas station and bar. The larger cities on the coast have main-stream hotels, restaurants from every culture, and many bars that Bryson utilizes.

The best part of the book in my opinion is when the author visits the Great Barrier Reef with a good friend. He travels to the Reef on a large boat with approximately 400 people and takes part in various water-related activities. There is also talk of a couple who were killed near the Reef several years in the past, and rumors of Jellyfish and sharks that like to nibble on humans, so Bryson is careful the entire time he is near the water.

Overall, In a Sunburned Country is very entertaining and will definitely make you laugh once or twice every chapter. Bill Bryson has a straight-forward, easy-to-understand way of writing and will always leave you wanting to read more. Although the book is a bit long, it is still very entertaining. I would rate this book a 4 out of 5.

Love the great outdoors? If you’re the type who would rather be hiking up a mountain or rafting down a river that controlling the remote, you know exactly what I mean. I’m always amazed when someone tells me their ideal vacation requires a hotel room with 100 channels on the remote. Give me a mountain view, or the sound of a rushing river and I’m in bliss.

The challenge is to stay connected to the calm and joy of nature when you can’t be in that ideal location. What if your life requires a city address, too-close neighbors, and daily chores that threaten to suck the energy right out of you?

Over the years, I’ve found some simple ways to sneak a little bit of the outdoors into my life, no matter where I am. OK- I can’t transplant a Redwood into my den, or afford a home next to the crashing waves. What I can do is to figure out what it is about nature and the outdoors I love most, and find some small ways to incorporate that into my daily life.

1. Plants and foliage. Maybe watching leaving gently swaying out your window allows you to breathe more deeply. Maybe cacti and sand is therapeutic. Or maybe the scent of hydrangeas lights up your brain cells. Even in the tiniest city apartment you can find ways to use container plants, an indoor potted plant, or a line of small cacti along your window sill to help connect you with nature.

2. Seating for one. OK, you might want some cozy space for two people to enjoy whatever bit of nature is visible from your current venue. If the only thing you’ve got going on is a breathtaking sunrise, place a porch swing in the best viewing place. Maybe your porch or back yard offers a view of some woods or simply a bit of solitude. Try those beach inspired, wooden, Adirondack chairs. The low seating and optional footrests almost insist on relaxation and bring thought of ocean side enjoyment.

3. Bird and Bees. No, I mean the real birds and bees! Try setting out a bird feeder to invite some of nature’s ambassadors to your home. If you really are against trying to attract bees, how about some butterflies? Certain plants are very attractive to these winged beauties.

At the end of the day, your ability to function in the real work is directly connected to how well you are able to unwind, relax and put things in perspective. So, go ahead and plan for a trek along the Long Trail of the Northeast. Gear up for a cross country bike riding expedition in the western mountain trails. Or maybe make plans to visit the wild horses on Georgia’s Cumberland Island.

Until you get there, make sure to find some way to stay connected to the outdoor life. For many of us, it’s what makes the rest of life shine.
